About Us: Newspapers were published in Sydney long before Melbourne and Geelong had been colonised.
The founder of the Geelong Advertiser, John Pascoe Fawkner, also had the distinction of founding the first newspaper in what was to become Victoria.
The Melbourne Advertiser was first published on January 1, 1838, and the first nine editions were handwritten ??? there were no printing presses, or type.
After a brief recess ??? because it was discovered Fawkner had not obtained a licence ??? it re-emerged in February, 1839 as The Port Phillip Patriot and Melbourne Advertiser.
Competition quickly emerged for Fawkner, and on January 3, 1840, The Port Phillip Herald, later to become The Melbourne Morning Herald, and today remaining as The Herald, made its first appearance.
Fawkner bought a new press for the Patriot, and assigned his old press to the care of James Harrison, who was commissioned on Fawkner's behalf to establish a newspaper in Geelong.
Harrison, the founding editor, soon became proprietor of the paper, but is best remembered outside Geelong for his invention of the first mechanical process of ice-making.
The first editions of the Advertiser, consisting of four pages, were published weekly from a four roomed house on the north side of Malop Street, between Yarra and Bellerine streets.
Within 10 years the Advertiser was being published daily, by which time the office had shifted twice.
The first move, in 1841, was to Yarra Street on part of the site of the former power station, and the second, in 1849, to another address on the north side of Malop Street, just east of Clare Street.
While the Advertiser continued as a morning paper, The Melbourne Morning Herald, became an evening paper in 1869, allowing the Geelong paper the distinction of being Victoria's oldest morning newspaper.
The original Fawkner press was offered for auction in 1850, but, after no bids were received, it was donated to the Museum of Victoria, where it remains.
